Most wiring mistakes happen before a single cable is laid. They happen at the shop counter, or on a phone call, when someone picks a wire by price instead of by specification. The good news is that choosing the right electrical wires and cables for your home isn’t complicated — once you know what to actually look for.
This isn’t about being an electrician. It’s about understanding a handful of facts that’ll help you ask better questions and avoid a costly redo somewhere down the line.
Wire gauge the thickness of the conductor determines how much current the cable can safely carry. Use a gauge that’s too thin for your load and you’ll get overheating. Over time, that becomes a fire hazard. It’s a problem that builds slowly and shows up dramatically.
For a standard 15-amp bedroom circuit in an Indian home, a 1.5 sq mm copper wire is generally sufficient. Kitchens and AC units typically need 2.5 sq mm or higher because of the load they draw. Anything serving heavy equipment a geyser, a large AC, or an industrial machine should be assessed by a qualified electrician before you choose a cable spec.
The rule of thumb: when in doubt, go one size up. Oversizing a wire costs a little more upfront. Undersizing it can cost far more later.
Aluminium wire was common in older Indian homes because it was cheaper. You’ll still find it in many buildings constructed before the 1990s. The problem with aluminium is that it expands and contracts with heat cycles more aggressively than copper, which loosens connections at junction boxes and switchboards over time.
Copper wire has better conductivity, handles heat better, and holds its connections far more reliably. For any new residential or commercial wiring work, copper is the correct choice. Full stop.
If you’re in an older property and you’re noticing flickering lights or tripping breakers on circuits you haven’t changed, it’s worth having an electrician check whether aluminium wiring is part of the story.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certifies electrical wires and cables through ISI marking and if you’re buying wires for a permanent installation, this isn’t optional.
An ISI mark tells you the cable has been tested against defined standards for conductor cross-section, insulation quality, voltage rating, and fire resistance. Unbranded wire with no certification is a gamble. It might be undersized, use substandard insulation, or have inconsistent conductor quality across the length of the same cable.
When you’re buying electrical wires and cables, check for the ISI mark on the sheathing. If a supplier can’t confirm whether their wire is ISI-certified, that’s an answer in itself.
Not all insulation is equal, and the environment your cable runs through matters. Standard PVC-insulated cables work well for concealed internal wiring. For wiring that’s exposed to sunlight, moisture, or outdoor conditions, you need UV-stabilised or weather-resistant variants. Running a standard indoor cable outdoors will have its insulation degrading within a few years.
There’s also the question of fire-retardant (FR) cables. For any installation in a multi-storey building, or anywhere with significant fire risk, FR-rated cables are worth specifying. They’re manufactured to slow the spread of flame along the cable a small spec difference with a meaningful safety implication.
So before you order, think through the route: will the cable be concealed in a wall, run through a conduit, exposed on a surface, or passing through a damp area? Each of those situations has a cable specification that fits it best.
If you’re unsure which electrical wires and cables are right for your specific project, that’s exactly what the team at Mercury Electrix is here to help with. We stock ISI-marked copper wires across all standard gauges, along with FR-rated and outdoor-rated options for more demanding applications.
